Zazen

Zazen is a form of seated meditation practiced in Zen Buddhism. Here's a simple way to implement it:

  1. Find a quiet, comfortable spot to sit. You can use a cushion or a chair, as long as your spine is straight and your posture is relaxed but alert.

  2. Close your eyes gently or keep them slightly open with a soft gaze toward the ground.

  3. Place your hands in a comfortable position, such as resting them on your lap or forming a mudra (hand gesture) like the cosmic mudra (hands resting on your lap, palms facing upward, with the right hand on top of the left, and thumbs lightly touching).

  4. Take a few deep breaths to center yourself and bring your attention to the present moment.

  5. Once settled, focus on your breath. You can observe the sensation of your breath as it enters and leaves your body, or count your breaths if it helps to maintain focus.

  6. Thoughts will inevitably arise; when they do, simply acknowledge them without judgment and gently return your focus to your breath.

  7. Continue this practice for a set period of time, starting with just a few minutes and gradually increasing as you become more comfortable.

  8. When you're ready to end your session, gently open your eyes and take a moment to notice how you feel before resuming your activities.

Remember, the essence of Zazen is not about achieving a particular state of mind, but rather about simply being present and aware of each moment as it unfolds.

Areas it can help in:
Calmness, clarity, focus, awareness, peace, insight, mindfulness, concentration, patience, presence.
