The acronym stands for Substitute, Combine, Adapt, Modify, Put to another use, Eliminate, and Reverse. SCAMPER provides a structured framework for brainstorming and problem-solving, allowing individuals to explore various possibilities and innovations. This technique was popularized by Alex Faickney Osborn, the originator of brainstorming.

How to Apply SCAMPER:

  1. Substitute:

    • Identify elements of the problem or idea that can be replaced or substituted with something else. Consider different materials, processes, or components.

  2. Combine:

    • Explore possibilities of combining elements or ideas to create something new. Consider how different concepts can be merged to enhance or transform the original.

  3. Adapt:

    • Consider how the idea or solution can be adapted or modified to suit a different context or audience. Think about adjustments that could make it more versatile.

  4. Modify:

    • Explore ways to modify or alter specific elements of the idea. This may involve changing shapes, sizes, colors, or other characteristics to create variations.

  5. Put to Another Use:

  6. Eliminate:

    • Identify elements or steps that can be removed from the idea or process. Consider what happens if certain components are eliminated altogether.

  7. Reverse:
